Crackas for crackers

Crackas for crackers

Ah lads, I really miss crackers. Along with my crisp habit in my pre coeliac days, another breakfast fav of mine was 6 crackers and a cup of tea. I dunno why 6 was my magic number but it worked well for many a year. Sometimes, on a bold day I would have 6 cracottes and then 2 jacobs cream crackers. Alas, that was back when I was off the hook nutso for wheat based goods in the morning. I genuinely miss crackers a lot. Get your violin out NOW.

These days, crackers are a distant memory as the gluten free versions tend to be awful, dry, smelly yokes. A bit of generalisation there but I have tried the lot. The DS crispbreads, Le Pain des Fleurs and those manky DS herby things, blurgh. The Glutafin little round ones aren’t too bad, kind of like tucs, tis rare enough you see them though. If I’m really having cracker withdrawals I get the buckwheat Pain des Fleurs and smother them with so much dairygold that you can’t tell where the cracker starts and the butter ends. These with a hot mug of tea are the best you are gonna get my gluten free friends. Unless there are another brand I don’t know about and if so, TELL ME.

I find the best selection of crackers in Supervalu for some reason, SuperValu Churchtown being the absolute mecca that I have found to date. It’s so good I get a sainsburys like buzz off the place.

See above for my latest find, M&S Sea Salt and Black Pepper Lentil Crackers from Grafton St branch. These are less like crackers, more like crappy crisp substitutes you get in a health shop. They were tasty enough, but not crackers. Also not worth the 3 bucks I spent on them.

Still, they’d get you out of a hole so to speak and kudos for M&S for innovative GF products.

Discovery Gluten Free Crispy Crumb coating

Discovery Gluten Free Crispy Crumb coating

I fully disclose at the outset that the feast above was prepared by my mum on Sunday at an hours notice (Two words, ledge bag), the only thing I did was devour it and take a little photo.  Myself and Mos were feeling a bit bloated from the Bodega goodness from the night before so requested a nice healthy salad for lunch. If you knew my mother you wouldn’t be surprised that what she produced was absolutely delicious but also not exactly healthy.

Aside from the freshly fried bacon bits and home made egg mayo, mum also coated chicken strips in Discovery Crispy Crumb, found in Superquinn. You should hopefully be able to see the big green gluten free labeling  I can’t say as I didn’t witness it but apparently the cooking was as easy as coat the meat in oil and whack the crumb over it, then oven bake. The crumb is labelled as being for fajitas so by association, with spice but whatever spice is in there is very subtle as well as being extremely tasty. I checked Tesco yesterday and Superquinn in Ranelagh (can you sense my desperation?) and no sign of the coating yet but I will let you know as soon as I have a sighting!
